There can be very few people in the UK today who would not gladly see the death penalty restored, if only for the man standing trial for the murder of two 10 year old girls. Today Huntley took the stand and claimed "I did not intend to kill girls ". His description of the 'accidental death' of the two girls followed by his disposal of their bodies- which included burning them with petrol to 'remove evidence' will have rocked a nation tonight.

But, you will not find me pronouncing on this mans guilt or innocence, that is a matter for the courts, and I am glad that a jury is hidden away considering all the evidence. I am glad that I live in a just nation where a man is considered innocent until proven guilty.

And, dare I say it, this ought to apply as much to a suspected child murderer as to a terrorist. It saddens me that on both sides of the Atlantic today, remarks are made about untried suspected terrorists which would not be made about Huntley. Huntley is having his day in court, and we will hear his defense in the coming days. Surely terrorist suspects need the same treatment?
