Following the controversy surrounding the broadcast of Jerry Springer - The Opera on BBC 2 last Saturday night, this is an update on what the Evangelical Alliance has been doing and where we stand now.

The Evangelical Alliance made public a critique of the West End Show which the Alliance's Head of Theology, Rev Dr David Hilborn went to see before the BBC broadcast. You can read his comments on our website, together with some other information.

What the Alliance is doing now

We are lodging a formal complaint in writing with the BBC governors, OFCOM and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, on behalf of all our members.
We are in constant communication with other groups and Church leaders across the spectrum of our constituency about this issue and are seeking a co-ordinated and sustainable response. We plan to be robust in calling the regulatory bodies to account in their various areas of accountability.
Like many others, we were hoping that this show would not be broadcast, but our view is that the issue is not over and in many ways action is needed now as much as before.
How we call regulatory bodies to transparent accountability will set important precedents for religion and broadcasting in the future.

We are aware that other Christian groups are pursuing a possible case of blasphemy, are monitoring the situation and will keep our members informed.
