An open email deploring the actions of a criminal minority against the BBC
I post below an Open email to the BBC and Ofcom and would urge other concerned individuals on both sides of the Jerry Springer:The opera debate to do likewise. The email was sent to mark.thompson@bbc.co.uk, contact@ofcom.org.uk and info@bbc.co.uk
Mr Thompson,
As a Christian I wish to formally distance myself from the terrible
treatment that some of your executives have been receiving concerning
the Jerry Springer: The Opera show.
Whilst I have been calling on fellow Christians to make polite
protests via email, letter and phone calls to the BBC and Ofcom, I
deplore the publication by a certain website of personal contact
details of your executives. I am utterly apalled by the behaviour
of the criminals who have made death threats to individuals in your
organisation, and assure you that the vast majority of your viewers
would obviously condemn such actions.
I have posted on my blog a strong condemnation of such behaviour and
will continue to urge a civilised approach to the current
controversy.
I trust that the vast majority of the 50,000 comments you have
received have been polite and well-meaning, and I hope that the
personal disruption caused to your members of staff and the very real
fear some of them must be experiencing passes as soon as possible.
I would be greatful if you would pass onto such executives the
concerned best wishes of the majority of BBC viewers who as much as
some might strongly disagree with the actions of the Beeb in putting
on the Jerry Springer:The Opera show of course deplore far more the
actions of a criminal minority.
I would urge the BBC to announce a public inquiry immediately into why
the offensive nature of this programme was not properly considered
before it was shown on BBC. I hope that such an action would take
some of the "heat" out of the current groundswell of opinion and
would give an opportunity to air the legitimate grievance that many of
us who have never previously complained about any program feel.
