Blair is off the hook and must be breathing easier tonight. To most commentators the almost unspoken way the rest of his premiership was to play out was that he would fight and probably loose a vigorous campaign to implement the EU constitution in a referendum, then bow out gracefully making room for Brown (although I am not so sure that Brown will get the unchallenged take-over he wants). Now he surely wont have to put this constitution to a vote, I wonder if he regrets stating he would move aside before the next election.
