DG06 – Final Session – John Piper

DG06 – Final Session – John Piper October 1, 2006

Tim Challies has not yet published on this session, so again here are some quotes from New Attitude on the closing session:

“Tears welled up in Piper’s eyes as he talked about the cross: I don’t like getting angry at people in evangelical churches. This is not fun. It’s heart-breaking. But what can you do when they attack the center with blasphemous cynicism? Nothing is more crucial for humanity than to escape the omnipotent wrath of God. It’s not the goal of the cross, but it’s infinitely necessary. The ultimate goal of the cross is in 1 Peter 3:18: “Christ suffered . . . that he might bring us to God.” The end goal is enjoying God.

Piper talked about the role of mystery. The Bible says now we see in a glass dimly, then face-to-face. What we know about God is so small compared to what we will know. What’s the function of that statement about God? Getting saved is like being dropped into the mountain ranges of God’s glory. At every cliff you see more and more glory. But this unknowing is a projection out of what you know. I believe in mystery . . .

May the church become the pillar and buttress of truth, and therefore of joy, and therefore of love, and therefore display the glory of God and the supremacy of Christ in all things.

So ended the conference with just our voices, singing:

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand
