As the year begins to draw to an end, one thing I like to do is share a list of the top non-search engine referrers to this blog. This is of course by way of thank you. I do encourage you, if you own a blog, to frequently link to your favorite bloggers and interact with them. And, if you don’t have a blog, why not think of starting one?

Thank you is deserved by the following sites especially, but also by the many more sites who individually sent fewer, but in collection with others sent more than any one site. If 10 sites send 1 visitor each, that is surely better than one site sending 8 on their own.

So thanks for linking everyone, and if you haven’t heard of some of these sites why not pop over and visit:

What Readers of Church History are interested in!

I’ve found it intriguing to note what posts are becoming more popular on The
Church History Blog, as well as the often completely daft (and often highly entertaining) search terms that lead people there.

Here are the top 6 posts during the last quarter:

John Wesley and his Wife (part 2)
John Calvin and Martin Luther – some differences
Mary Slessor the ‘Mother of all Peoples’
John Wesley and his Wife (part 1)
The God Delusion Debate
John Wesley Tries to Find a Wife

The interest in how Wesley bungled his personal relationships has bumped a still highly popular post down to No.7, yes, you guessed it:

‘Lord make me pure but not yet!’ – Augustine’s wayward prayer!

For those who may be concerned that other aspects of church history are not being accessed by serious readers of the blog, be reassured.

In terms of all time favourites the following are still right up there:

The 18th Century Awakening in Europe and America
The Conversion of the Wesley Brothers
The Birth of Modern Revival – Puritan Preaching in Scotland
The Puritans and Sin
Calvin and the Doctrine of Election

Here are some of the craziest search terms. I won’t attempt suggesting which posts they got to:

• why are charismatics dancing in church now?
• flaming evangelist
• worms standing together
• stories of fist fights and brawls in church
• I am yours in 17th century speak
• actual photo of john Wesley
• shut up wesley
• 3rd century nuns what did they give up?
• songs by Lex about Calvin
• John Lennon had big forehead
• nails in church doors
• Jonathan Edwards flocks to Jesus Christ

Well, I hope if you visit the Church History Blog you’ll find some inspirational stories that will spur you on to love and good works. Enjoy!

Today we feature, “10 Ways a Christian should respond to the earthquake in Japan.” As the world was reeling from the astonishing news from Japan, this post proved quite popular as it attempted to think through how Christians should respond:

10 Ways a Christian should respond to the earthquake in Japan

As Japan braces itself for a possible further serious earthquake, and deals with the consequences of such massive devastation caused by the last one, not to mention the risk of a major nuclear incident, how should Christians respond?

At this time of year I always like to thank all those who have sent readers here, and of course the readers themselves. In the past twelve months a staggering 2,090 sites other than search engines sent traffic to this site. I wish I could thank all of you individually. Many of these will have sent just a tiny handful of individual visitors. I know for some of you, you run a small blog with few readers and maybe you think what is the point of linking to an established blogger. Well, the truth is, we really are more together than we are apart, and it is the many small links that help drive traffic to this and other sites.

Your blog, with every other blog helps send traffic here and to other sites you think it is worthwhile your readers seeing. For that I am very grateful. Remember, the internet is like a giant library with no index system! You help to index the web, and every link you create helps Google to deliver more relevant results! Speaking of Google, on my links page is a Google search engine set up to search this site and any site I have ever linked to. You should find it a very helpful resource if you want to study any Christian subject.

Without further ado, here are the top 70 referrers of the year. This year the list makes interesting reading as some very big sites do not do as well as before. Justin Taylor, Facebook, and Twitter are clearly consolodiating their grip on the top of these results, but there has been some movement beneath those three big hitters:

Interesting and challenging post alert. Do you (like me) connect online mostly with other Christians? Perhaps Twitter can help us change this (and similarly Facebook where just the fact that your non-Christian friends get to see your interactions surely has to be some kind of witness, you better hope its a good one!) I should say, of course, that there is nothing worse than someone connecting with people soley for the sake of inviting them to church. Jesus would want us to be “in” the world, showing genuine love to people, not merely seeing them as “evangelism fodder.” Having said that, the opportunity definitely exists for real relationships to be forged online that can lead to offline consequences. One site that might help you in this process is http://nearbytweets.com

Here is an extract from a post that got me thinking about this:

Before I became a Tweep I had no idea that Twitter could be used as an evangelism tool. After I created my Twitter account in May of 2009 it didn’t take long to see that Twitter is chock full of Tweeps who will connect with you if you’ll take the time to find, watch, listen, engage and share with them. Tweeps on Twitter are waiting for Christ followers who will be real, authentic and transparent. What else? If you want success in Twitter evangelism you must be non-judgmental, loving and willing to connect with people that don’t believe, think, look or live like you. In my opinion we need to “love people to Jesus”. I am going to share stories about the people who come to bible studies, volunteer at the homeless ministry and go to church due to connections they’ve made with my friend, my pastor and me through Twitter.

http://katdish.net/2010/06/twitter-brought-them-by-mike-ellis/.

The observant of you will have noticed that the site has sped up considerably over the last few days. This is because of a move to the wonderful VPS.net. Cloud hosting is the way of the future. A single hardware failure (like a hard disk) now cannot bring my site down. And I have better responsiveness than we were getting on a dedicated server which we were sharing with a few other sites.

WordPress is further sped up by using the W3 Total Cache plugin, which works wonders with something called APC. Thanks to the great tech support at VPS, and some great advice from Anthony Somerset, I was able to ask them to switch that on, set W3 Cache to use a disk cache for pages, and use the APC-enhanced caching mode for everything else. With javascripts and html “mimified”, GZip switched on, and eTags disabled the database just hums along! Of course I barely understand any of that but don’t have to thanks to the “managed support” who also moved across the domains and coped admirably with the minor teething problems inevitable.

Just for the real geeks like me out there, we have also enabled a few plugins that this new server can eat up, while the old one could not. The first is “Yet Another Related Posts” which serves the lists of links you will now see at the end of each post. Then there is a plugin simply called “Like” which serves the Facebook Like button, and “Tweetmeme” which gives us the Twitter button. I have also included the Zoe City daily top ten links in my sidebar, which all come from Christian websites.

Anybody with any further suggestions for me to futher improve or tweak the site, let me know. Also, if you are in the market for a new server host, then VPS.net is definitely worth a look.

I really thought that no one would even care about my recent decision to “go British” on a minor style issue. So I was pleased that someone has taken notice, and very amused by the following quote, which came from Andy Lowe. With tongue firmly placed in cheek, he put some imaginary words into my mouth:

So what did Adrian have to say?

“I decided that it would be best to emulate one of my favourite bloggers, Andy Lowe, who inspires me in almost everything I write. It is fair to say that without his influence I would be lost in a sea of grammarless despair and writer’s block (or should that be writers’ block? I’m sure Andy would know). Since he uses ‘sentence case’ for titles, that is what I shall do.”

Or you can read what he actually said, but I think my version is better.

Either way, sentence case is clearly the way forward!

Oh, yeah, and the BBC have copied me as well.

Read more at Quite a bit, which incidentally looks like an interesting blog. This whole post, of course, obeys the first rule of blogging: if you want a blogger (in this case me) to notice you, link to them. Not saying that Andy had ulterior motives, of course, but you must never allow yourself to think that any blog has enough links going to it. As I often say, “Link unto others as you would have them link unto you!”

Michael Hyatt speaks this blogger’s language:

When I post to my own blog, for example, I know there are likely errors in what I have written. But no matter how many times I read and re-read my posts, I can’t see them. Instead, I post them as-is, and my brother-in-law, Jack Parsons, proofs them after they go live. He emails me the errors he finds.

It doesn’t have to be this way. As the CEO of a book publishing company, I have numerous editors available to assist me. I could run my posts by them before putting them up on my blog. I could also submit them to our lawyers for legal review. I could even have our marketing people have a look.

But if I followed that process, I would never post anything. Instead, I have embraced the concept of permanent beta. I launch and then tweak. This is the pattern.

As G.K. Chesterton once famously said, “If something is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.” In other words, the point of absolute perfection never comes. Too often, this is just an excuse for procrastination.

via Embrace the Concept of “Permanent Beta”.

I do often get my editor to look at the posts before they go live, but if you see mistakes, don’t blame the editor, but feel free to drop me an email to point them out!

I have been enjoying reading Michael Hyatt’s blog recently. He really gets social media, as well as being the dynamic leader of the largest Christian publishing house in the world. His is a voice worth listening to. I particularly liked what he had to say about Twitter in a conversation with a colleague:

“Twitter is an opportunity for you to lead in a way that was not possible until now.” I explained. “As you and I both teach, when you boil it down, leadership is influence. Agreed?” “Agreed,” he acknowledged. “Leadership is not about position, a title, or status. It is about influence. Plain and simple. I know you believe that, too, right?” “Right.” I continued, “If that’s true, then Twitter provides an unprecedented opportunity for people like us to extend and amplify our influence. You don’t have to buy time on television or radio. You don’t have to write a book or magazine column. You don’t even have to blog,” I went on. “All you have to do is write short 140 character micro-posts about what you are doing or—more importantly—what has your attention right now.” I could almost hear his brain shift into a different gear. “You and I both know that people today crave leadership. They are dying for role models. They want to see what good leadership looks like—as it is lived out in the challenges of everyday life.”

via Twitter as a Leadership Tool. (emphasis added)

If you are a leader, why not get yourself on Twitter today?

Happy 2010 to you all! As you read this, I will no doubt still be at the Enfield multiplex cinema where our church meets to see the New Year in with worship and prayer. I hope you are also enjoying the New Year celebrations.

I wanted my first post this year to be a big thank you to all those websites that send me traffic. I obviously can’t thank the more than 2000 separate sites that have sent some traffic this way in 2009. Each one of you is, however, much appreciated. The following list is the current top 60 referrers (as of the last quarter of 2009 only). There has been some significant movement since I last shared this list. The numbers in brackets reflect the position of a site in the old list. As usual Google and other search engines are excluded.

I have reviewed previous blogging years in 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, and 2004.

These summary posts really do show something of the history of this site, and hence my life over this time. I sometimes wonder how long I will be able to keep all this blogging up, but to be honest, most of the time I simply cannot imagine life without the opportunity for reflection a blog brings.

This year will forever be known in my mind as the year of the book. It’s the year when all my previous efforts to write this thing came into sharp focus by the ever looming deadline. It’s the year when I often wondered if I would ever manage to submit a vaguely decent manuscript. It’s the year when I realized just how much of a novice I still was at writing, and more particularly, at editing. It was the year I realized how hard it is to let something that feels like your child grow up and leave home as it were. That was an ominous recognition, given that for me letting a real child leave home is not so many years away, and will be much harder than letting a book go!

It was also marked by that surprisingly long time when you submit the manuscript and are not meant to do anything while the publisher prepares suggested edits, then the constant tweaking as different proofs come your way. Not to mention publicity materials to approve, websites to help develop, and the constant wondering whether, when the book finally comes out, anyone will actually want to read it. The life of a first-time author can be an emotional roller-coaster of being pleased that some people like the book enough to write nice things about it, but then some minor set back or other knocks you back to wondering why you ever tried to do this!

So with all that going on, and my incredibly busy family life, work, and church, is it any wonder that blogging felt like it took more of a back seat than usual this year?

Back in January, I re-ran a series on preaching to begin the year. I also visited my first conference of the year, Together At Butlins. Terry Virgo’s talk there on Jonah was especially notable.

In February, I was able to interview Hugh Palmer after he preached at our charismatic church. Probably a first for a Conservative Anglican like him! I also wrote one of very few truly thoughtful posts this year, when God demands the impossible.

I posted a series of quotes from Jonathan Edwards on TULIP. I also shared a particularly fascinating quote on John Piper’s perspective on the Baptism with the Holy Spirit, and reflecting on my time with Hugh, asked myself “am I a conservative evangelical?”

March saw me sharing two extraordinary sermons by my pastor, Tope Koleoso, one on alcohol and one on sex. His insight, wisdom, and humor made these talks legendary at Jubilee. If you missed them at the time, go back and watch them right now!

You, my readers, also helped to title my book, which felt very strange at the time since I thought I knew what it would be called. I now think you chose well! I interviewed Tim Smith, worship leader at Mars Hill. We were also blessed to have Tim Keller speaking in London.

April was dominated by the New Word Alive conference, which still had me sharing material in June! I also posted about the missing O.

In May you all stepped in again to help me choose the cover of my book. What a great cover it is too. Thanks to the designer.

I also did a series on the Gifts of Spirit which continued into June.

In June I once again attempted to restart my series on the Together for the Gospel Statement. I do hope to get back to that in early 2010. I posted a quote from Tope entitled “Why I should when I preach.” I also shared a video of Terry Virgo preaching on Elijah’s prayer which was later mentioned by John Piper.

In July I was delighted to meet Andrew Fountain again when he visited us at Jubilee to see what God is doing there. Apple gave me a new Macbook Pro, and it was time to start editing my book again. It was wonderful also to be able to bring my wife with me to Together On A Mission for the first time in years.

In August I published a guest series and wrote on the Rich Man and Lazarus. My daughter made her debut as a conference blogger, and I shared some ideas about how anyone can help promote a book they like.

In September I wrote about claiming God’s promises, not believing your own publicity, and a short series on wisdom.

October and November saw me sharing two fantastic sermons from Tope Koleoso on worship, the availability on pre-order of Raised With Christ, as well as a series of endorsements for the book. I found a letter to a soon to be published author to be very helpful. I also was directed to some amazing footage of Billy Graham from the 1950′s. I enjoyed reading about how thirty years ago John Piper responded to the voice of God, and Spurgeon’s belief in Second blessings of the Holy Spirit.

I was deeply impacted by a trip to the Newfrontiers Prayer and Fasting, and I am still feeling that impact today. It was also announced that Logos Bible Software has put Raised With Christ into their pre-publication program.

I shared a rather personal video of an interview between me and my daughter about my experiences of being bullied at school.

December was dominated by the illness of Matt Chandler and the move of this blog to WordPress.

I look forward to sharing 2010 with you, my readers. May it be a blessed time for all of us.

Forget even about the content that is hopefully easier to read and find with the new design.

The thing that is causing some discussion in the Warnock household is what about the color of the sidebars? It seems that both my family and the rest of the world are divided on this issue! Some people love the chocolate brown and think it is original and fresh. Others think its well, too chocolately and forms too much contrast. Here is your chance to express your opinion.

As the begin dictator around here I reserve the right to ignore you all, but hey, you got to change the title of my book and pick its cover, so unless you choose pink then I am likely to at least give it a go!

Well this is a new experience for me.

We have been experiencing server go-slows and even freezes today. It seems that at least for the way the server was set up there is just too much traffic! In all my years of static blogger hosted on ftp I don’t remember a traffic spike causing me problems. It reminds me of the preacher who was worried about his church building being too full so he decided he had to do something to make some of his congregation go away and not come back. Kinda missing the point, huh!

Thanks to the troubleshooting work of Dwayne, we have managed to get things a bit more stable around here, but that has partly been at the expense of disabling (at least for now) some of the new swanky features I spoke about earlier. We may try putting some of them back soon and see what happens, but not for now! It looks like in particular the server couldn’t cope with a feature in our fancy ad-buttons plugin being enabled which figures out what country each reader is from and serves them an appropriate advert.

I am on a fairly professional server, and it is more than possible that when Ian Jukes is up from his sick bed some super-admin changes may get this thing moving better. Anyone out there with any tips gladly received!

But hey, I can officially say my blog was so popular that one day the server couldn’t take the strain! That is super-cool in a way. I can just hear Scotty now saying “She cannae take the strain, Captain!“ I think the Klingon’s must have sabotaged us . . ! I am begining to wonder if I need some kind of upgrade to the engine.

I know, some of you are missing the old look of this blog right about now. Some of you are shocked by me saying that as you hated the old one! But, I do know that I was very anxious when I first saw the early prototype, and yet I found over time that it definitely grew on me. Now I love it, though a bit like my wife with our own physical home, I see a few flaws, and have some plans for improvements!

So, think of the new theme like moving house. No matter how much you like the new house, there are always things you miss initially about the old one! So, I thought that I would take a post to show you around a bit.

If you read the blog via the feed, then all this change won’t make any difference to you, apart from the fact that each post will now have a “related posts” list automatically generated for you. Click on one of those posts and you will see what all the fuss is about! Incidentally, that same related posts feature sits in the sidebar of the blog on the main site whenever you are on an individual post page.

The design is intended to be a lot clearer, but let me explain a few things to look out for. When you visit the main page you will currently see the first two posts in full. I am interested among other things in knowing how that seems to you as it is an option I could tweak. I think its a good number, but I am open to change it in the future. You can read those two posts as normal.

As you scroll down you will see a number of excerpts from other posts. Some people say these look a bit like a newspaper. These teasers are designed to help you catch up if you haven’t been on the blog for a few days or longer. You can scan the headlines and the first paragraph of all the posts you have missed and click on the title of any you want to read in full.

If you get to the bottom of the page, you can click “previous posts” to see older posts. Think of it a bit like turning a page.

In the sidebars you will see a number of different things. First up, there is a bit of advertising. Do feel free to follow the links and hence support the site, or to read more about placing an advert of your own and/or speak to beaconads.com who resell some of the advertising space here. At the moment there is no danger of me making my fortune by advertising, but it does help to offset some of the costs of running a site like this. Blog adverts are a cheap and easy way of reaching Christians compared to paper magazines. Like many young Christians I do not regularly read a single Christian newspaper or magazine, and when I do, I usually find them intensely annoying!

Also in the sidebar is advertising for my book’s website, and as that site develops you will see future headlines from it appearing here. Underneath this is links to my Facebook and Twitter pages. You will also see a useful search box that a number of people do use to try and find material I may have written or linked to on any specific subject. If that doesn’t help you find what you are looking for, on the links page, you will find a specialized google search engine which searches this site and every other site I have ever linked to.

It is also possible to find posts from the sidebar by date or category (=subject). Underneath everything I have mentioned so far you will also find “Related posts” which are auto-generated only on specific post pages, “Recent Posts” which shows, well, recent posts, “Popular Posts”, which shows which posts are getting the most visitors at the moment, and in case you are still reading, one of my favorite features “Random Posts” which can be from any time since April 2003 when I started writing the blog.

On the far sidebar you will see the most recent posts from the Warnie Winners, who are listed (and the concept of a Warnie is explained) on the links page.

Feel free to explore, follow a few links, and as always, let me know by Twitter, Facebook or e-mail what you think!

In order to make this work you have to set up a Google Profile, which essentially lists all your various services and then enables Google to figure out who is in your social graph. No new list of friends to maintain, you will be glad to know! Take a look at the Google profile for Adrian Warnock to see what it can look like.

I got home just a little while ago from grabbing dinner with a man who I am starting to see as a friend. I am usually a little nervous about leaders in the broader evangelical movement if I am honest. I worry that my friendships with the people that run New Word Alive might make some perceive me as their enemy–I do appreciate that I am probably wrong to think that way, at least in most cases! I did not have any such concerns meeting Krish Kandiah, but if I had he would have allayed them instantly with his warm greeting.

In fact, Krish somehow currently manages to personally straddle the growing gulf emerging in UK evangelicalism. For example, he was I think, the only person who spoke last year at both New Word Alive and Spring Harvest and he didn’t get thrown out of either!

If Krish is reading this, he may by now be worried. He need not be as I do not believe in making the contents of private conversations public. Suffice it to say that we agreed on many things and disagreed firmly but respectfully on just a few.

Krish has an engaging warm personality and his passion for Jesus shines. In his attempts to foster dialogue and understanding between very different wings of the church at this time I do not envy him. I am not sure that it is even possible.

Krish is active in a number of iniatives. These include, his blog, the Slipstream network aimed at encouraging emerging leaders, the Square Mile, and a four-pronged plan to increase biblical literarcy called Bible Fresh. He has also invited me to be one of the speakers at DigiMission which takes place on 1st December. I can only be there virtually, but it looks like an interesting event.

We are actually hoping to get a redesign up very shortly (possibly even this week), so this will give us a good baseline to look at what people think of the new site after they have had a chance to get used to it. So, please take just a few moments of your time and click here to take the survey.
