C. J. Mahaney

C. J. Mahaney. I first heard C. J. preach in the 1980s. It was an infamous sermon from a series entilted, People God Killed. Other messages he has preached over the years have been equally impacting, and are also always very funny. His leadership of a charismatic movement of churches is well known. But what really impresses me is the string of Christian leaders who he has drawn alongside and helped, often at critical times in their ministry. His friendship with the other members of the “Together For the Gospel” band of brothers is deep and genuine. C. J. is a rare breed, a charismatic who can play golf with John MacArthur. You can read my interview with him or read my review of his book on the Cross.

C. J. Mahaney takes leave of absence after accusations from former leaders in Sovereign Grace

July 7, 2011

For many years I have personally benefitted from the ministry of C.J. Mahaney. I remember several sermons that have shaped my life, including ones on the following subjects: people God killed, the cross, humility, and suffering from the book of Job. I have had the privilege of meeting him on a couple of occasions. Both [...]

Book Both "Together" Conferences NOW

February 28, 2008

I can’t offer two conferences for the price of one, but I can—in one post—discuss two conferences which, for all the similarities of their names, do have some important differences. For a start, they are on opposite sides of the Atlantic, so booking into the wrong one would be a significant logistical headache! I am [...]

C. J. Mahaney – Pastoral Character and Loving People

February 26, 2008

Well, sleep or a sermon by C.J.? Tough choice, huh? You can see from this that the C.J. talk won that battle in the Warnock house. Listening to both Driscoll and Mahaney “live” on the same day has to be every preacher’s dream! C.J. read from the opening of 1 Corinthians 1: “Paul, called by [...]

Mark Driscoll Apologizes For Not Being Humble

November 10, 2007

UPDATEThis sermon clip is making a stir in the blogosphere for all the right reasons—a great example of the typical reaction comes from Josh Harris. The influence of C. J. Mahaney on Mark Driscoll is becoming ever more plain. In this clip Mark ‘steals’ an outline of practical advice on how to be humble from [...]

C. J. Mahaney on the Cross

July 6, 2007

I have now provided thoughts on the cross from Wayne Grudem, C. H. Spurgeon, and Tom Schreiner. Today it’s C. J.’s turn: “As a pastor few things affect me more than interacting with those who are unaware of God’s personal love for them. Normally there isn’t a week that goes by where I’m not talking [...]

A Prayer for an Exhausted Mark Driscoll

March 19, 2007

Over the weekend Mark Driscoll has posted about feeling exhausted and struggling with poor sleep. He is typically honest and open. More honest and open than many religious Christians would like him to be. I am a little concerned with my psychiatric hat on that such symptoms, if ignored, could be the prelude to something [...]

Shepherds Conference III – C.J. Mahaney Asked to Preach by John MacArthur

March 9, 2007

Shepherds’ Conference III is a post with a set of notes which my buddy, Tim Challies, made of C.J. Mahaney’s gig as stand-in for John Piper. To play stand-in for someone like Piper has to have been slightly off-putting, even for a man like Mahaney! C.J. took the opportunity to talk about humility, and wisely [...]

Better Than I Deserve

January 18, 2007

As I write this, for some reason my thoughts are turned to a phrase C. J. Mahaney is famous for. Apparently when asked, “How are you doing?” he makes it a habit to answer, “Better than I deserve.” As I think about my life, I am more and more convinced that is true of me. [...]
