John Piper

John Piper should need no introduction to most readers of this blog. Piper stands in a distinguished line of preachers who are passionate that we not only understand the Bible but also meet and respond appropriately to God himself. These have included Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Charles Spurgeon, and Jonathan Edwards. Piper’s hunger for “the anointing” and for us to feel the full impact of the felt presence of the Holy Spirit is inspiring. Piper has a voice that is heard across a wide variety of church backgrounds. I was delighted to interview Piper, and video and transcripts are available. I also often blog about quotes from John Piper’s writings, and we enjoyed having him at the 300 leaders conference.

John Piper on the passing of another year and our glorious future

December 15, 2011

This is a great video of the Piper family, it was created by Carolyn McCulley and is well worth a visit.

John Piper on self promotion vs being influential for Jesus

September 8, 2011

In keeping with my theme this week of self-examination, I thought I would highlight two things I found on Justin Taylor‘s blog. The first was a post on self-promotion by Dane Ortlund. This really hits the mark and is a great provocation to us. Like many such pithy thoughts it is of course, however, one [...]

August 21, 2011

During Adrian’s month away from the blog, he has hand-picked a selection of the most popular posts of the year so far to re-run.  Today we feature, John Piper’s interview with Rick Warren on doctrine and The Purpose Driven Life. John Piper and Rick Warren are friends who come from slightly different wings of the [...]

John Piper on How to Recognize a Wolf-In-The-Making

July 28, 2011

This quote might be old, but it is bang up to date! Let me just mention one feature to watch out for in the recognition of wolves. As I have watched the movement from biblical faithfulness to liberalism in persons and institutions that I have known over the years, this feature stands out: An emotional [...]

Keller, Piper and Carson on aging graciously and transition

June 18, 2011

I know many of my readers are pastors. So this video will be especially relevant to them as three great men of God talk about the losses that aging brings, and wise transition. But it is also of relevance to all of us as we remember our human frailty, and strive not to allow ourselves [...]

More reflections on the Piper Warren Interview

June 3, 2011

Here are some thoughts in my mind as I think more about the interview I linked to earlier this week. Firstly, Warren and Piper clearly respect and love each other greatly.  There are some areas, especially in style, where they disagree.  But they do so as brothers.  They do so as two people who value [...]

John Piper interviews Rick Warren on doctrine and the Purpose Driven Life

May 31, 2011

Back in 2009, I wrote about why, unlike many other reformed bloggers, I really appreciate Rick Warren. So you can imagine my pleasure was as great as some others displeasure when John Piper invited him to speak. A detailed meeting of the minds was promised, but delayed due to family health issues that prevented Rick [...]

The Apostle Paul’s Blogging Checklist, Hell, and Rob Bell

April 12, 2011
Thumbnail image for The Apostle Paul’s Blogging Checklist, Hell, and Rob Bell

Now that Rob Bell’s controversial book Love Wins is on sale on both sides of the Atlantic and many other comments have been made, I am feeling like I cannot avoid engaging in the controversy, or at least should read some more material to understand it better. I did not seek out such involvement, as [...]

Why a belief in hell is so practically important

April 4, 2011

We don’t believe in hell for practical reasons.  We believe in it because the Bible tells us it is so, and that settles it for us.  No matter what some may say, we cannot be shaken from that.  But, I ask, do we really live in light of that belief?  Is is something that emotionally [...]

10 Ways a Christian should respond to the earthquake in Japan

March 14, 2011

As Japan braces itself for a possible further serious earthquake, and deals with the consequences of such massive devastation caused by the last one, not to mention the risk of a major nuclear incident, how should Christians respond? Please understand that none of this is intended to claim that we have all the answers to [...]

How good things can rob us of loving God

January 31, 2011

What takes the place of love for God in your life and mine? Is it always sin? Not according to Piper. It is of course relatively easy to live an outwardly “pure” life, free from the most obvious of sins. But our hearts are way more deceptive than that: The greatest enemy of hunger for [...]

Making Jesus the central thing

December 7, 2010

I love this quote from Piper’s excellent book “What Jesus demands from the World” It really captures in a nutshell what being born again is all about: When a person is born anew and experiences repentance, his attitude about Jesus changes. Jesus himself becomes the central focus and supreme value of life. Before the new [...]

Appropriately enough given what we were speaking about yesterday, this month an important new book was released by Crossway. Entrusted with the Gospel is based on expositions of 2 Timothy and has a broad range of contributors. Here is what I said about it, I encourage you to go buy a copy and read it! [...]

SERMON: What has sustained John Piper for thirty years?

August 3, 2010

These notes are from the morning session of the 300 conference we recently had with John Piper. I have set them to auto-publish today, as I have been reliably informed that by now the video and audio of both this talk and the excellent Q and A should be available from 300leaders.org pop over and [...]

A prophetic word from John Piper for the new reformed movement

July 19, 2010

Reformed people often forget that Piper is almost as much of a charismatic as I am! He is no doubt a bit more cautious than me about gifts, but he does believe in them. In this video clip he shares what he describes as a prophetic word that has a warning for the reformed movement [...]

New John Piper sermon: The Gospel and racial harmony

June 28, 2010

This past Sunday it was a joy to have John Piper with us at Jubilee Church in London. He seemed to be very much at home with us, and was clearly enjoying preaching one of the very few sermons he will preach this year. We benefitted greatly from this talk as Jubilee continues to aim [...]

Prioritizing your marriage

June 24, 2010

The single thing that has impressed me most about John Piper is his recent decision to pull back from ministry for a few months, with only a couple of exceptions. This was in order to put his wife first and spend some proper time with her, disengaged from doing ministry for God, a very godly [...]

Why burning the candle at both ends is sin

June 23, 2010

Has it ever struck you that trying to avoid sleep so we can accomplish more is as sinful as it is foolish. For sure we can do it for a short time, and there may be times when it is right to do just that. But for many burned out executives, sleep is something to [...]
