Arminocalvinist Spectrum or Arminians vs Calvinists

In 2010, Adrian introduced the idea of an Arminocalvinist spectrum to the blog. The word was not a neologism with him, nor was the idea that Arminians and Calvinists have much in common novel. Another word sometimes suggested is Calminian A vigorous Twitter discussion ensued, much of which is preserved here, but if you don’t like tweets you can safely ignore those posts!

Where do you stand? Are you a Hyper-calvinist? Strong Calvinist? Seven Point Calvinist? Five point? 4.5 points? Reformed Arminian? Strong Arminian? Open Theist? This series should help you clarify your own position while respecting others.

As always, if you want to follow the series from the beginning, keep pressing previous till you get to the earliest post then work from the bottom up. Unusually for series on adrianwarnock.com, some notable earlier posts which in many ways pre-figured this latest series are included.

Although technically written at the end of last year, this post on an arminocalvinist specturm [...]

Giving Spurgeon the last word on Arminianism and Calvinism

December 14, 2010

At least for now it is time to call time on my short series on Arminianism and Calvinism. I hope you have enjoyed reading it, as I have certainly enjoyed some of the reactions it led to.  I shared this quote a few years ago, and I thought it was an apt way to end: [...]

How God used a murder to accomplish his purposes

December 13, 2010

This Jesus, delivered up according to ithe definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. (Acts 2:23–24). In our discussion about Calvinism and Arminianism perhaps one of the critical verses is Acts 2:23-24. In it we see both man’s responsibility and God’s sovereignty displayed. I thought I [...]

Incarnatio: Responds to the Arminocalvinist spectrum

December 11, 2010

After being very gracious in his introductions, Matt O’Reilly says: First, it is quite helpful to point out the differences (or spectrum of beliefs) within the larger Calvinist and Arminian groups.  There are things that Calvinists disagree on; the same is the case with Arminians as well.  Different people mean different things by these labels.  [...]

An Arminocalvinist spectrum, or why it’s not so simple as Arminians vs Calvinists

December 10, 2010

I think when we come to the Arminian / Calvinist debate we must understand it is not simply a clear cut issue.  When I meet other Christians and get to know them, the most important question I have is not whether they agree with every line of theology I have, and express that agreement with [...]

Arminians vs Calvinists, daggers at dawn?

December 3, 2010

It need not always be this way. A while back I posted on the famous Wesley vs Simeon encounter which demonstrated that moderate Calvinists and moderate Arminians can in fact agree. If you are not aware of that incident, please do read about it. More recently, Luke picked up on my post which cheekily asked [...]

Was Spurgeon an Arminocalvinist?

November 18, 2010

I found the following quote initially on Solo Christo , but thanks to Logos Bible Software I was able to find more context for it. It turns out that on some matters Spurgeon was not the rabid Calvinist some people think him to be: There has long been a great doctrinal discussion between the Calvinists [...]

A few months back, Piper posted this excelent couple of paragraphs about the need to make GOD the central thing as we try to lead people to a shared understanding of theology. . . .a Reformed position mainly means, God is really big, really strong, really powerful, really knowledgeable, really wise, really great, really weighty, [...]

SERMON – A Song Of Hope – Psalm 121

September 5, 2008

On the 24th of August, I preached a sermon at Jubilee during our summer series on some famous psalms. I took Psalm 121, which served as a starting point for me to share some of the most important planks of my personal doctrinal framework—a framework that has sustained me through hard times. As blogging around [...]

August 28, 2007

As regular readers will know, this week I am swiftly working through the glorious doctrines of grace—the so-called “TULIP.” Today we reach the Limited Atonement item which is, in my opinion, the most misunderstood, and the item with possibly the most nuances needed in our understanding of it. I preached the following sermon at Jubilee Church, London yesterday.
