Heaven, Hell and Rob Bell – a Face to Face Debate about Love Wins

In the above video you can see the whole of Adrian Warnock’s face to face debate with Rob Bell. An MP3 download and a full transcript are also available. This addressed the vital issues raised by his book, Love Wins – A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived.

In the links below (and you can hit previous posts for more) is a series of posts covering these issues in more detail. Particular highlights include Why Adrian was initially reluctant to get involved in discussions about this book, Adrian’s Universalist Spectrum and some more background to the debate.

Or, you can watch the following extracts from the interview which each have a few reflections accompanying the videos and are good places to contribute to the comments section:

  • Is Rob Bell no longer an evangelical?
  • Rob Bell confesses clearly that he does not believe in Hell as most evangelicals understand it.
  • Rob Bell is so dangerous because he is so right about so much
  • Does Rob Bell believe all will be saved?

The Apostle Paul’s Blogging Checklist was a post written during the Rob Bell controversy, but it has an enduring messaage that should guide us in our online writings: The Apostle Paul’s [...]

The reality of Hell – a sermon by Tope Koleoso

    July 10, 2011

The above sermon will shake you to the core. Tope didn’t mention those who have recently been denying hell by name, but his disagreement with them could not have been clearer. This is a compassionate yet very direct sermon on a painful but important subject. It was my delight to pray with someone at the [...]

Concluding question: Does MY life consistently demonstrate my belief in a literal eternal hell?

    May 6, 2011

If you want to know what someone really believes you should look at how they live. Now, of course we should be emphasizing the positive good news of the gospel. We should be speaking in such a way as to induce wonder. But if I really believe in an eternal hell where those who do [...]

What about babies, those who dont know and other hard cases

    May 6, 2011

To speak first about Babies, Bell acknowledges the common evangelical understanding (often seen among Baptists) that babies and children below an age of accountability will be saved. He uses this to make a grotesque argument that is presumably designed to lead to the idea that in fact all are saved. It is of course sometimes [...]

What about CS Lewis, John Stott and Hell?

    May 5, 2011

People argue that Lewis suggested similar things to what Bell has said BUT 1. He did believe in Punishment, but stressed mans role in choosing that punishment and 2 He suggested these things tentatively as possibilities rather than boldly and 3. he didn’t mock the other view as hopelessly inadequate and “a bad story” and [...]

Franklin Graham: “Rob Bell is a heretic and a false teacher”

Franklin Graham’s comments about Rob Bell can be seen around 2:50 into this video:

Is Rob Bell a neo-liberal who does not take the Bible literally?

    May 4, 2011

If you have got this far in reading every post I have written on Rob Bell since my debate with him, you are doing well! I am almost done. But today I want to address a strong accusation I put to him in the debate. I claimed that he approaches the Bible very differently from [...]

What does the Greek word for eternal mean?

    May 4, 2011

One issue that we did not get our teeth fully into during my debate with Rob Bell was the meaning of the Greek word for “eternal.” This reminded me of a three part series I once did on Cows, Dogs, and Political correctness for some reason. Bell seemed to be arguing that it did not [...]

Does Rob Bell know how people get to heaven?

    May 3, 2011

“Heaven is, after all, full of surprises.” says Rob Bell in Love Wins. Also, in one of the most worrying bits of the book in my view, he lists a whole load of questions which have the effect of undermining any sense we can have of knowing what it is that leads to clear salvation. [...]

    The loving wrath of God

    May 3, 2011

Love is not some insipid woolly emotion offered to everyone in the same way irrespective of their response. Love is passionate. Infinite love is infinitely passionate. God’s love has content. He truly cares about us, and more than that he truly cares about the honor of his name and the glory of the trinity. God’s [...]

The very objection to wrath is so culture bound

    May 2, 2011

There seems to be an aversion to speaking of the eternal wrath of God these days. I noticed it in my debate with Rob Bell, and it is also seen in the following quotes from his book (anyone who knows the page numbers, please send them to me as I read it on the Kindle: [...]

Will everyone (eventually) make it to heaven? Jesus didn’t think so.

    April 29, 2011

Rob’s book constantly casts doubt on the notion that there is a hell that will be full of people suffering for eternity. Others have cast doubt on that by speaking of anihilationtsm, where people’s suffering is not eternal, but the consequences are. With that view the unsaved pass out of existence at some point in [...]

Heaven, Hell, and Rob Bell – How DARE you question God?

    April 28, 2011

Bell asks, is it unjust for God to not save everyone? I reply: how dare you question God? Rob thinks he is God, that he can somehow help the whole of humanity. He makes an interesting admission in the following quote from Love Wins: “Many have heard the gospel framed in terms of rescue. God [...]

Hell and the wrath of God – It is not only love that wins

    April 27, 2011

I think that part of the problem that Bell and others have with hell is a lack of understanding of the seriousness of sin and God’s response to it. We may be finite, but we sin against the infinite. Bell claims that many people already think of God as angry at them. I suspect that [...]

VIDEO: Does Rob Bell believe all will be saved?

    April 27, 2011

This is a good example of Rob Bell’s slipperiness. Despite what he says elsewhere in the interview, here he seems to be supporting at least some concept of hell. But then he appears agnostic about universalism. Evangelicals like me find this degree of uncertainty hard to stomach! You can watch the whole of this interview [...]

VIDEO: Why Rob Bell is so dangerous – So much of what he says is so right!

    April 27, 2011

This clip shows the problem that Rob Bell poses the church today. At the beginning he sounds so plausible, and lets be honest many Christians today do not emphasise the love of God sufficiently. But as I mention towards the end of this clip, we do need to preach the bad news as well as [...]

VIDEO – Nailing Rob Bell down to express clearly his disbelief in eternal conscious punishment in hell

    April 27, 2011

In this video clip Rob Bell asked me one too many questions. If you see a builder point at your foundation and say “Is that really strong enough? Is it possible that your house may fall down if I build it here? Isn’t it more likely that the cement that was used is too sandy? [...]

VIDEO: Has Rob Bell demonstrated clearly that he is not an Evangelical any more?

    April 27, 2011

In this clip I tell Rob Bell that because he has a very different approach to the Bible, it is hard to accept him as an Evangelical.  I also explain that the main reason for the anger of many evangelicals is that we have learned to expect and to a certain extent accept this kind [...]
